The Walk
The Southern Loop is the entry point to the Happy Valley Reservoir trail network. At 2.39 km with 56 m of ascent, it is the shortest and easiest of the four routes — Walking SA rates it Grade 2 Easy, and that assessment is fair. You can walk it in 30 minutes at a comfortable pace, or slow it down and take your time without pressure.
That said, “easy” in a reservoir reserve context still means formed gravel and dirt trails with a modest elevation variation between 146 m and 162 m. The surface is good throughout but includes sandy shore sections on the eastern and western edges where the path runs close to the water. This isn’t difficult walking, but it’s different enough from a park path to feel purposeful.
The purple trail markers are clearly placed throughout and the loop is simple to follow. A colour-coded trail board at the trailhead carpark shows all four Happy Valley routes — the Southern Loop is the most compact circuit on that board.
The Setting
Like the other Happy Valley walks, the Southern Loop is contained within the SA Water catchment reserve surrounding the reservoir. Native bushland flanks the path on the landward side, with water views opening up near the shore sections. The reservoir is a working water supply — no swimming, no fishing, no watercraft.
Birdlife is a constant companion. Wrens, honeyeaters and waterbirds are commonly encountered, and the quieter nature of a shorter loop means there’s less foot traffic to disturb them.
Who It’s For
The Southern Loop works well as:
- A first walk for someone new to the reserve
- A short outing when time or fitness doesn’t allow a longer circuit
- A family walk with younger children
- A warm-up before combining with the Woodland Loop on the same visit
The trailhead carpark has toilets, picnic shelters and BBQ facilities, which makes it an easy base for a longer outing across multiple loops.
