The Walk

The Woodland Loop is the middle-ground option among Happy Valley Reservoir’s four walking tracks. At 3.87 km with 65 m of elevation gain, it covers more ground and terrain than the Southern Loop without pushing into the demanding territory of the Shoreline or Boundary circuits. It opened in December 2021 as part of the expanded trail network around the reservoir.

The walk follows yellow trail markers through native eucalypt woodland to the north of the reservoir. The woodland setting is notably different from the shoreline-adjacent sections of the other loops — you get more shade, more birdlife in the canopy, and less direct exposure to summer heat. The trade-off is fewer open water views.

There is one creek crossing approximately halfway through the circuit. In dry conditions it presents no difficulty. After heavy rainfall it can become uncrossable, at which point you’d need to backtrack. The trailhead noticeboard carries current condition updates — worth a look before you set off.

The Terrain

The elevation range sits between 150 m and 168 m, making this a genuinely undulating walk rather than a flat one. The climbs are short and the descents manageable, but the cumulative effect over 4 km means it’s a step up from a park path. Grade 3 Moderate is the correct classification.

The surface is consistently formed gravel and compacted dirt. Good walking shoes or trail runners are appropriate — waterproof footwear is worthwhile if there’s been recent rain.

The Trailhead

The Chandlers Hill Road / Kenihans Road roundabout carpark is the base for all four Happy Valley Reservoir walks. Facilities here include:

  • Flush toilets
  • Picnic shelters
  • BBQ
  • Drinking water fountain
  • Wheelchair-accessible facilities
  • Colour-coded trail map board

All four walks begin and end at this carpark, which makes it easy to combine loops or attempt different circuits on return visits.

Practical Notes

  • Check the creek crossing status before heading out — the trailhead noticeboard has current conditions
  • Yellow trail markers throughout — look for the trail board at the carpark junction
  • Reserve closes on Total Fire Ban days — check cfs.sa.gov.au
  • Gates locked at closing time — 5:00 pm in winter, 8:00 pm in summer
  • No dogs permitted anywhere in the reserve
  • No mountain bikes on this loop
